ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - No high winds, and no heavy snow or ice in our area -- so why are thousands of Ameren Missouri customers without electricity?

Ameren Missouri Vice President of Operations Kevin Anders says in an unusual but not unprecedented situation, vehicles are grinding up road salt, which gets airborne and settles on the insulators of Ameren's high-voltage structures.

"And when you combine that with that light, misty percipitation that we had today, it allows the electricity to conduct across that insulator into the wood part of the structure, heat it up and ultimately catch it on fire and cause power outages," Anders says.

At their height Wednesday morning, more than 9,000 Ameren Missouri customers were impacted by outages.

Currently, there are about 6,100 homes and businesses without power.
