ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Marking his first 100 days on the job, St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden says he pleased that violent crime is down 20 percent in a notorious swath of north city he calls "Hayden's Rectangle."

The chief says he added more officers and more police cameras in the area bounded by Vandeventer and Goodfellow -- east and west -- and West Florissant and Dr. Martin Luther King -- north and south.

City-wide, the chief says he's putting 30 more officers out on the streets by deploying more high-ranking police who usually work indoors.

The department remains 130 officers short of its authorized strength.
