ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Emergency room docs were busy on the Fourth of July with 20 fireworks injuries across SSM Health's eight hospitals, including 8 at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.

“It sort of runs the whole gamut, you know, vision threatening type injuries from being struck in the eye or near to the eye sufficient enough to cause some temporary or permanent  vision loss," says Cardinal Glennon emergency physician Dr. John Peter.

Peter says the injuries ranged from minor burns to more significant burns by kids hit by bottle rockets and Roman candles and one major injury of a child struck in the head by a commercial fireworks rocket.

“Most of them are, in one way or another, preventable,” he says.

The child struck in the head is expected to recover.
