2019 Voice of Caring: The Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund (SOS)

April 25, 2019 - 10:26 am

The Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund (SOS) is the premier women’s collective giving grant-making organization in the metropolitan area, with over 200 members. Each member gives an equal amount of money annually ($1200) and has an equal vote in how the money is distributed. There are no fundraisers or galas, no agency infrastructure to support -- SOS relies solely on donations given year after year by its members. Any woman can become a member.

Since 2007, the SOS has invested over $2.4 M in the St. Louis community, benefitting 80 agencies. Rigorous vetting fueled by a highly informed membership allows The Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund to act as an incubator, focusing on smaller nonprofits that are doing outsized work in the St. Louis community.

SOS also works to inform and educate people about the issues facing our city.  Past topics have included immigration, food deserts, health equity and the impact of parental incarceration on children.

SOS is growing up the next generation of women philanthropists through the Girls Giving Grants Fund, an initiative that teaches high school aged girls (grades 9-12) the discipline of planned, informed philanthropy.

The Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund is a donor-advised fund of the Saint Louis Community Foundation and a member of CATALIST, a growing national network of women’s collective giving organizations.
