ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOX) - A man suffered a broken bone near his eye along with other injuries when up to a half-dozen people attacked him on board a moving MetroLink train.

The assault happened Monday on board a crowded westbound train heading from the Rock Road to the UMSL campus station.

At the direction of one person, several others suddenly began kicking, punching and slamming a lone passenger to the floor over and over again, causing him to be hospitalized.

St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch admits it's a scary incident, but says it goes against recent safety trends on board Metro trains.

"It's my understanding in talking to the county police, certainly, that the number of Part One crimes - major crimes - on MetroLink are down significantly this year," he says. "But, they draw attention because they are in such public places."

He's advocating for turnstiles or some other safety measure that will ensure only paying passengers get on the trains.

County prosecutors filed charges Friday that accuse 23-year-old Jahma Swanigan, 23-year-old Jody Dale and 31-year-old Eddie Price of attacking the man.

Meanwhile, the search is on for three others. County police are hoping surveillance images captured during the assault can help them arrest all those involved.
