ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - This past weekend, dozens of people were treated for heat-related illnesses throughout the area, including at least 10 cases at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, 10 at SSM Health emergency rooms, and five at St. Anthony's.

There have been two heat-related deaths so far, both in St. Louis County.

Dr. Kiran Kancherla, a cardiologist at SSM Health - DePaul Hospital, has these tips for keeping cool:

  • If you need to go outside, try to go early in the morning or late in the evening. Peak-heat is in the middle of the day.
  • Drink a lot of fluids and take a water bottle with you.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing, like wick-away polyester or cotton.
  • Eat light, and eat foods with lots of fluid content, like citrus fruits - peaches, plums, watermelon, oranges.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis has issued a heat advisory, in effect from noon Wednesday, July 4, to 8 p.m. Thursday.
