ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Observing five healthy lifestyle habits could add more than a decade to our lifespan.

The five are: Stop smoking, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, keep a healthy body weight and don't drink too much.

“If we subscribe to all five of these things, it’s shown that we can increase our lifespan by 12 to 14 years. Even if you can’t subscribe to all five, just subscribing to some of them does still impart some lifespan benefits so we can live longer, being with the people we love for longer," says SLU Care cardiologist Dr. Michael Lim at SSM Health SLU Hospital.

The Harvard researchers also found that those who maintain the healthiest lifestyles are 82 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, and 65 percent less likely to die from cancer.
