Activists Gather to Protest Increasing Surveillance Cameras in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A demonstration is planned outside St. Louis City Hall this morning by activists upset with the growing web of surveillance cameras around the city.

The demonstrators support a plan by Alderman Terry Kennedy to pass a bill that would protect privacy by setting up guidelines for city surveillance cameras.

“These technologies have proliferated, and in many instances, government’s ability to regulate them has not caught up with the proliferation of the technologies,” he says.

New technologies could include license plate readers, facial recognition software, cameras that record audio of people nearby. Kennedy says the bill he's drafting would address how the information would be used, stored, and who would have access to it.
