Actor Alan Alda's Parkinson's Diagnosis Brings Awareness to Disease

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Actor Alan Alda's public disclosure that he has Parkinson's disease prompts new awareness of the neuro-degenerative disorder.

“I was diagnosed three and a half years ago and I’ve had a full life since then," he says.

The 82-year-old Alda tells CBS he's not angry and considers it a challenge.  But neurologist Dr. Prityi Rani at SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital in Lake St. Louis says we need to keep in mind this is a progressive disorder of the nervous system.

“At one time you will have multiple different types of symptoms but anything’s off balance, the medications stops working, you’re going to have fluctuation of the symptoms,” she says.

While there is no cure for Parkinson's, Rani says doctors can help patients cope with the symptoms as the disease progresses.
