(CBS) - For the 27th year, labrador retrievers are the most popular dogs.

"They are an adorable breed," says Brandi Hunter, with the American Kennel Club. "They're great with families, they're adaptable, they're an ideal sporting dog, they don't shed too much, and their coat doesn't require that much maintenance, and they're extremely loyal to their families, and I think that's what makes people gravitate towards them."

German shepherds and golden retrievers are 2nd and 3rd, respectively, according to the new American Kennel Club rankings out today.

Frenchies hit a highest-ever No. 4, and German shorthaired pointers cracked the top 10 for the first time.

"People like that the French bulldog is an easy-going breed," Hunter says. "They're very adaptable if you live in an apartment - they're not too big, they're not too small, they don't require a lot of exercise."

The French bulldog went from 76th to 4th in just 20 years. It previously peaked at 6th in the 1910s, and again in 2015-2016.
