Alton Offers Reward for Information in Possible Arson Fires

June 07, 2018 - 8:24 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Two fires in the past week have added to fears that an arsonist is on the loose in Alton.

Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says since the first of the year they've had to respond to at least eight suspicious fires at vacant buildings.

In each case there's been a strong suspicion that the fire was deliberately set.

“There is no reason for the fire to have accidently happened. There was no electrical service, no gas service, and there were no storms that night to have caused a possible lightning strike,” he says

The fires have all occurred in the late evening or early morning hours at homes that have no working utilities. The city of Alton is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
