When out shopping for gifts this holiday season, why not take a few extra minutes and deliver your own gift — the gift of life?

That suggestion is coming from the American Red Cross as they desperately try to make up for recent shortfalls in blood donations.

Spokesperson Joe Zydlo says they've put out urgent requests for help before, but never this early in the always-busy holiday season.

"We had about 21,000 fewer donations between September and October nationwide," Zydlo told KMOX's Brett Blume. Some of that impact had to do with the hurricanes, especially in the Carolinas."

Normally, the American Red Cross would make this kind of plea at the end of December or early January. Zydlo says right now blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in.
