Bayer Drops Monsanto Name, Absorbs Millions in Liability

August 17, 2018 - 8:03 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Bayer is getting ready to drop the name "Monsanto," but it won't be able to drop millions of dollars in legal liabilities stemming from the now-former St. Louis -based company.

Germany-based Bayer says it can now begin to digest its acquisition of Monsanto, since all anti-trust sell-offs are now complete.  That means the name "Monsanto" is almost history.

The division will be known as Bayer Crop Science, and St. Louis will be the divisional H.Q.

But absorbing Monsanto means Bayer assumes responsibility for a $289 million verdict alleging the weed killer Roundup caused a California man's cancer.

A statement says:  "Bayer believes that the jury’s decision is at odds with the weight of scientific evidence, decades of real world experience and the conclusions of regulators around the world.”
