Bears are becoming more active as the weather warms up, perhaps accounting for the increased number of sightings.

Alan Leary, with the Missouri Department of Conservation, confirms that bears are emerging from their winter dens and yearlings have been pushed out to find their own territories.

Leary says they have a saying - "A fed bear is a dead bear" - to remind people to try and eliminate any outside food sources near their homes, such as trash cans.

He says if you encounter a bear and feel threatened, back away slowly while facing the bear, make noise and use your arms to try and look bigger, while giving the bear a clear escape route.

Attacks are rare -- Leary says in the state's history there has never been a report of a bear killing a person.
