Belleville Finishes Out Classes After Threat, Shut Down Wednesday

May 25, 2018 - 9:59 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - One day later, students at a pair of Belleville Illinois high schools celebrated their final day of classes yesterday.

Superintendent Dr. Jeff Dosier says things were largely back to normal at both Belleville East and Belleville West.

“We do have additional police officers on campus, and it seems to be a pretty normal day,” he says.

St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly says 18-year-old Derek Burton of Belleville faces three counts of aggravated assault using a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a person under 21, and a felony count of disorderly conduct for threatening to harm someone at a school.

“An adult in this situation reported what they knew to the police as soon as possible, and did not take the threat and the conduct lightly and I think that is probably why we avoided catastrophe in this situation,” he says.

The three aggravated assault charges stem from an incident the day before when Burton allegedly pointed his mother's gun, which he took without permission, at people while making threats at a gas station parking lot.

Burton is being held on a $55,000 dollar bond.
