After Black Friday, the focus for shoppers turn towards ''Small Business Saturday.'

It’s the day is designed to get consumers to shop at small businesses. It was created by American Express eight years ago during the last recession.

Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert says people have really bought into it. He says the Belleville Main Street program has done a good job marketing Small Business Saturday.

“If you don’t know what day it is, and you’re downtown that Saturday, you will say ‘WOW, why is there an abundance of people here?" Eckert told KMOX's Carol Daniel. "People have really bought into it.”

Eckert says he hopes consumers will think of small businesses every time they think about shopping, not just Saturday.

Officials in all 50 states take part in Small Business Saturday, which was so successful the very first year, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of the day to happen every year.
