Beware of Rabid Bats, State Vet Says

July 16, 2018 - 7:51 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It's that time of year again -- the Illinois state veterinarian is warning people to watch out for bats and other animals that can carry rabies.

Bats are more active this time of year. Doctor Connie Austin says it's better to be safe than sorry and stay away -- rabid bats won't necessarily look like Cujo.

“The bat could be flying around and have rabies, it could be done on the ground flapping around and have rabies, so you can’t just look at a bat and know whether it has rabies or not,” she says.

If you're bit, authorities will test the bat for rabies. Those bit by an infected animal need to undergo preventative treatment.
