Bill Confirms Renovations, Update for Quincy Veterans Home

July 18, 2018 - 10:46 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has signed a couple of bills to help speed up renovations at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.

The first paves the way to renovate and rebuild the home with a new water system to help combat legionella bacteria - responsible for 13 deaths since 2015. Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Stephen Kurda says it's what vets deserve.

“With the signing of this bill, we’re thrilled, because our veterans, that means they’re going to continue to receive the care that we always have received, and not only that, future veterans that we’ll be planning for, so we are extremely thrilled,” he says.

Another new law makes the nearby Sycamore nursing home part of the Quincy campus. It'll be renovated to house veterans while the major construction is underway -- Sycamore should be ready by the end of the year.
