Mr. Soccer: St. Louis Has Answers to MLS's Top Expansion Questions

Stadium plan? Local ownership group? Passion and tradition? Bill McDermott says the answer is "yes."

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - If there's anyone in St. Louis keeping up with the pulse of the U.S. soccer scene, it's Bill "Mr. Soccer" McDermott. He was a guest on KMOX's Sports Open Line Tuesday night and knows that even after the failed stadium vote in 2017, Major League Soccer has never forgotten about St. Louis.

"Yes, indeed they want to come to St. Louis," McDermott says. "They realize the rich tradition here, but not just the tradition, the continuing expansion of all the continual players, the new fields and being smack dab in the middle of the county."

McDermott, the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Famer, says St. Louis now has the answers to lot of MLS's expansion questions: is there a solid local ownership group? Is there a stadium plan and a way to pay for it? Is there an existing soccer culture in place? 

The answer to all of those, he says, is "yes."

After Tuesday's announcment of a new female led MLS ownership group, one of St. Louis' most famous soccer sons Taylor Twellman (ESPN soccer analyst and former U.S. Soccer Men's National Team player) also gave the plan his stamp of approval on Twitter:
