Black WashU Students Accused of Dine-and-Dash Meet with Police

July 19, 2018 - 7:27 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - One of the black Washington University students wrongly accused of leaving IHOP without paying spoke to CNN and says he's learning more about racism.  Teddy Washington was one of ten students stopped by Clayton police this month after they left the restaurant.

An officer said a group of five people ran out without paying.  Even though some of the students had receipts, officers still took them back to the IHOP, where a manager immediately said it was not them.

"There were two officers there, one of them came out of the IHOP, he said ‘you guys are the wrong group’ and gave us our receipts back, and the officer who had approached at the beginning was already in his car drove, he off and said ‘thanks for your cooperation’, and that was the end of the night for us," he says.

Washington and the other students are meeting with Clayton police today to talk about the incident.
