ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Lines won't be allowed to get any larger at Build-A-Bear stores around the U.S. due to overwhelming demand on "Pay Your Age" day.

A statement was posted by Build-A-Bear saying all U.S. Build-A-Bear stores "cannot accept additional Guests ... due to crowd and safety concerns."

"The response to our Pay Your Age Day event has been overwhelming and unprecedented in our 21-year history, and the safety of our Guests and associates is our top priority," the Build-A-Bear Workshop’s statement reads. "The crowds have greatly exceeded our expectations and, per local authorities, U.S. stores cannot accept any additional Guests for this event and are limiting lines due to extreme crowds and safety concerns. We understand our affected Guests may be disappointed, and we are working to address the situation. We will reach out directly to our valued Guests as soon as possible."

The deal allowed customers to "pay your age for any furry friend in the Workshop!" For example, if your child is 2 years old, then the stuffed animal would cost only $2. They usually sell for closer to $35.

KMOX was at the Saint Louis Galleria location to witness the line at the first-time promotion. There was a similar scene at the West County Mall location.

We spoke to one woman who had been waiting in line with her young son since 9 a.m. and did not enter the store until 11:55 a.m. Another woman, who had been in line for about two-and-a-half hours, said she wasn't going home "until we get a bear."

She says those waiting were able to move out of the line to get a bite to eat, without losing their place.
