Cardinals 1B Jose Martinez Celebrated The Birth Of His Daughter On Father's Day

Although he is leading the Cards in hitting and RBI, as his manager said last week, "babies take precedent."

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Jose Martinez wasn't with his teammates this weekend for the home series against the Chicago Cubs. He had a good reason not to be.

He was in his home country of Venezuela to be present for the birth of his daughter. He shared a photo of his new little girl on social media.


He knew it was somewhat bad timing, as St. Louis' best hitter this season, to be missing a weekend series against the division rival Cubs. But he quoted something his manager, Mike Matheny, told media on Friday: 

"It’s a big series for us, but that’s a monumental life occurrence."

She is Martinez' second child. 

He is expected to be in Philadelphia for Monday's matchup with the Phillies, first pitch at 6:05 p.m.
