Cardinals Have Handful Of Options As Wainwright's Temporary Replacement

Girsch says they expect Wainwright to miss just one, maybe two starts.

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The decision to place pitcher Adam Wainwright on the 10-DL Sunday won't affect the St. Louis Cardinals starting lineup until this Saturday, for what would have been Wainwright's next scheduled start. So who will be making the start? Well there are plenty of options in the Memphis Redbirds rotation.

Cardinals general manager Mike Girsch says the team won't commit to announcing a starter until it's necessary, but they "already have an idea on who it is."

Here's who it could be (Memphis Redbirds stats):

Jack Flaherty (3-0, 2.25 ERA):

He's the option with the most experience, as he began the season as the Cardinals fifth starter for Wainwright's earlier injury. He threw five innings and allowed just one run on five hits to the Milwaukee Brewers in his one big-league start this year. In his most recent triple-A start, he threw seven innings and allowed two runs on two hits and struck out six against the Omaha Storm Chasers.

Austin Gomber (2-0, 2.45 ERA):

If you're looking for the hot hand, it might be this guy. Gomber's latest start on Monday was against the Iowa Cubs, he struck out 16 batters, walked none and allowed six hits in eight innings.

Three other starters Dakota Hudson (3-0, 4.15 ERA), John Gant (3-0, 2.25 ERA) and Daniel Poncedeleon (1-1, 1.06 ERA) are probably the dark horses of the bunch.

Girsch says they expect Wainwright to miss just one, maybe two starts. So, whoever is called up later this week will likely be up for just a short promotion.
