Brebbia's Beard Stays Intact For Japan Series

The Cards 28-year-old reliever says since his season isn't really over yet, he'll stay "locked in."

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The typical ritual for John Brebbia has been to shave his grizzly, red beard at the end of the baseball season. But the St. Louis Cardinals pitcher says he's keeping it a bit longer, until he's done pitching in this calendar year.

He's among a group of MLB All-Stars, including Yadier Molina, in Japan for a seven-game tour against Japan's national team. And Brebbia's beard is making the trip, as he told KMOX's Chris Hrabe on Sports Open Line, Wednesday night. You can hear that full interview at the bottom of this page.

"The season isn't really over I guess, the MLB regular season has ended, but I still have some games within this calendar year to play so I though lets keep it for a little bit," Brebbia says.

And the 28-year-old plans to "have a little fun with the beard, while I'm over there ... some fun and tacky things to see what shapes I can come up with."

You can stay tuned to what he and his wife Amanda are up to in Japan thanks to a blog he'll be posting to:

Brebbia had the third-best WHIP among all Cardinals pitchers in 2018, behind only Miles Mikolas and Jack Flaherty. Although he's not used to pitching into mid-November, he says he's been keeping up with a throwing routine and wants to treat these games, in terms of a competitive level, similar to spring training.

"Even though they're exhibition games, losing is not fun and not doing well isn't fun," Brebbia says. "So even though it will be a blast to be over there, I'll do a lot of stuff that I'll really enjoy, it's not going to be as fun if I'm giving up dingers left and right. So I'll stay locked in and be able to preform while I'm over there."

Brebbia says he's a huge fan of freshly brewed tea and expects to try an array of local tea leaves on his trip. The other goal he says is to start an extensive kimono collection.

Can't wait to see that in Jupiter.
