Cards Will Focus on 'Roster Cleanup' Before Trade Deadline

John Mozeliak foreshadowed what may be ahead of St. Louis in the last few days before the non-waiver trade deadline.

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Since Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals have made more than a dozen roster moves – almost all of which include bullpen arms. The Cardinals bullpen is in the bottom third of the league in ERA (4.58) and has the fourth-worst batting average against in all of Major League Baseball.

President of baseball operations John Mozeliak says the recent moves were made to "create depth," add "flexibility" and improve aspects of the team "between now and the end of the year." He joined KMOX's Mike Kelly for their weekly conversation on Sports on a Sunday Morning:

The MLB non-waiver trade deadline is this Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET and Kelly asked Mozeliak "what piece would you like to add?"

Here's Mozeliak's answer:

"I think it's not really about a piece to add as much as more roster cleanup.

It's a phrase that we've been saying for some time now because when you look at all the pieces we have it just isn't giving us that complete puzzle or complete picture. So we're going to try to continue to reassess and perhaps try to find a better way to bring clarity to it."

Here are all of the recent moves St. Louis had made, concerning the bullpen:

- Acquiring left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve and right-handed reliever Giovanny Gallegos from New York in exchange for Memphis (AAA) first baseman Luke Voit and International Cap space.

- RHP Carlos Martínez (right oblique strain) placed on 10-day D.L., retroactive to July 20;
