ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — Carjackings are on the rise — not only locally — but across the country.

Saint Louis County Police Sergeant Shawn McGuire told KMOX Auto Show host Greg Damon why.

"Back in the day, (they could) hotwire a car and be gone," McGuire noted. "They can't do that anymore. They need to rely on that smart key being near the vehicle, and that's why you see carjackings up."

McGuire said to decrease your chances of being carjacked... park in "well-lit" areas of heavy traffic flow.

"Criminals don't like witnesses, so if you can be in a big area of people, there's other people around you that can help."

He also said if you find yourself being carjacked — don't try to overpower the attacker — instead do your best to get a description of the person and which way he travels.

"We don't want you fighting for your vehicle. We want you to be a good witness...that way if officers are in the area, maybe we can get behind that vehicle right off the bat."
