Two Drown In River At Castlewood

story updated 8/11/2018 at 8:20pm : Metro-West Fire Department spokesman Mike Thiemann tells KMOX News that two females drowned in the Meramec River at Castlewood State Park on Saturday afternoon. He says fire department divers pulled the bodies of the 34-year-old and 12-year-old out of about ten feet of water before sundown. Their names were not released. 

BALLWIN, Mo. (KMOX) - A leisurely Saturday afternoon of swimming turned frantic in Ballwin.

"At about 2:30 this afternoon Metro-West Fire District received a call for a potential drowning of two people, a 35-year-old female and a 12-year-old female, at Castlewood State Park in the Meramec River," Metro-West spokesman Mike Thiemann told KMOX News.   

As of 4:15 pm, Thiemann said responders were still in rescue mode, "We have crews on the water. We have dive operations with our people in the water. We have surface sonar and a canine operation."

Firefighters were told a bystander was able to successful pull a third person out of the river. No word on that person's age or condition. 

West County Fire Department and St. Louis County Police were also at the scene, Saturday afternoon.
