ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Chesterfield officials celebrated the opening of a new "compressed natural gas" refueling station.

Mayor Bob Nation says the $1.4 million station will fuel a dozen public works fleet vehicles, which will lead to significant savings.

“The January 2018 cost of CNG versus diesel was $2.17 versus $2.96, so that’s approximately an 80 cent per gallon difference,” he says.

A $1.1 million grant from the East West Gateway Council of Governments covered most of the cost.

“Our staff probably had been considering this for quite some time before it actually started coming to fruition,” he says.

Right now the station is only open for fleet vehicles, but Nation says the CNG industry wants to eventually expand its use to the general public.
