ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) - A Wentzville man is headed to prison for abusing his six-month-old son so badly that the child died.

A judge sentenced 22-year-old Robert Burnette to 26 years behind bars, Friday afternoon. The maximum sentence allowable was 30 years.

St. Charles County prosecutors accused Burnette of violently shaking the child, slamming him face down on a bed, then sticking fingers down his throat to get him to stop crying.

The abuse happened in the fall of 2016, and the boy died in late November of that year.

The child's mother, 22-year-old Megan Hendricks of Wentzville, has also pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death.

Her sentencing will be February 15th.
