ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge will be closed beginning next Monday, August 27, until August 2019 for construction on the roads and ramps leading up to the bridge.

The repairs are part of a $32 million project to replace a truss bridge located just east of the MLK.

A reminder about the coming traffic delays was shared Tuesday morning on the Illinois Department of Transportation Facebook page, urging Illinois residents to use public transportation and carpooling to help with the expected road congestion.

Barricades will be placed at the entrances to the bridge on both the Missouri and Illinois sides.

This will likely compound some traffic headaches for bi-state travelers who already feel the effects of construction on the Poplar Street Bridge to widen lanes. MoDOT plans to have at least one lane closed on both the westbound and eastbound sides of the Poplar through the end of 2018.

IDOT is encouraging drivers to use the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge as an alternate route, and to take advantage of public transportation.

The last time the MLK was closed for an extended period of time was in 2015, when it took about six months to resurface and paint the bridge.
