Controversial Developer Finally Pays Back Taxes Several Weeks Late

July 17, 2018 - 7:55 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - He's a few weeks late, but a controversial St. Louis developer has paid the back taxes he owed.

The collector of revenue's office says Paul McKee or someone representing him paid $318,000, what he owed in taxes, penalties and interest.

“We hold our smaller developers to high standards at least I do in my neck of the woods, and I would hope that we hold the biggest property owners that we have to same standards,” says 20th ward alderwoman Cara Spencer.

It's unclear if McKee's payment will change any minds. Spencer says there's more to it than just taxes - going forward, will he maintain his properties and bring them up to code? The city last month cut ties with McKee and his North Side Regeneration project. The city says it was taking too long, McKee said revitalization of an entire section of the city facing decades of blight will take a long time.
