ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis County Council is against any statewide proposal to merge the county with the city.

Councilman Mark Harder told KMOX's Mark Reardon he thinks most people in the region don't want a merger -- though there are some efficiencies to be found.

"Should we have some consolidation? Yes, I think there's probably things we can do and consolidation," Harder says. "I think there's issues we can work together on and we have been. But this is a in my opinion a nuclear choice here. And I think we could go out at a different way and get a better result."

Harder says he's introducing a bill next week that would put a non-binding referendum on a future ballot asking local residents what they think of the proposal.

The council already passed a resolution last year opposing any type of merger based on a statewide vote.
