ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -  Total crime in the city of St. Louis drops more than 5 percent in the latest police report. KMOX's Kevin Killeen says the raw numbers tell a different story.

Crimes with a gun are down for the year, but still running high in the city.

Through November of this year, St. Louis police have tallied 166 killings, most of them with a gun -- that's about 25 fewer than the same time last year. But gun crimes dominate the crime report, with 985 armed robberies citywide - 55 of them downtown, 42 in the Central West End.

There have been 2,189 victims of assault with a gun this year up to November, which is down about 11 percent from last year. In downtown, alone, 50 people have been assaulted with a gun this year, with 31 in the Central West End.

Car thefts downtown are up 26 percent over last year in the latest crime stats.

Through November, 97 vehicles have been stolen downtown, most of them cars. Downtown car break-ins are up just 2 percent, but 726 people have had that sinking feeling of finding a car window shattered.

In the Central West End, 79 cars were stolen in the same period - a drop of about 2.5 percent over last year.

Almost 2,500 cars have been stolen citywide so far this year - a slight increase over last year.
