Dads Go Through Post-Partum Depression Too, Pediatrician Says

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Lots of new moms are talking about tennis star Serena Williams sharing her post-partum depression emotions.  But what about all those new dads?  Do they share those same post-partum feelings?

Dr. Timothy Lackey is a pediatrician with the SSM Health Medical Group.  He says dads display those feelings differently than moms.

“If you notice the father or the dad is more irritable or if they’re spending extra time at work or especially if they’re distancing themselves either from the mother or distancing themselves from the baby especially. It’s a very difficult transition," he says.

Lackey says there are chemical reasons for post-partum in men, but some of it can also be attributed to sleep deprivation and a change in social lifestyle.
