Developer of New York's Garment District to Redesign Washington Ave

May 23, 2018 - 8:48 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Plans are underway to lure more development to Washington Ave, west of 14th Street. Missy Kelly of the group Downtown STL says the same firm that redesigned New York's garment district will offer suggestions on how to make the area more attractive.

“They’re also going to look at what industries and what specific market segments, business market segments, should we target in filling these empty buildings based on the space that we’re creating here,” she says.

Missy says the challenge is to drive new development west of 14th street, where Washington Avenue still has a significant vacancy rate. They’re also going to offer ideas on how gussy up the area.

“What is the street scape going to look like, will you have lights strung across the street, will you have up-lighting on the buildings, will you a walkway… There are a lot of different things that you can do to make a busy downtown street inviting,” she says.

Once known of "Shoe Street USA," Washington Avenue had more shoe makers than any other street in the world. Most of the recent revitalization has happened east of 14th street, with many vacancies remaining on the east side.
