Dick's Sporting Goods Stops Selling Guns to Those Under 21

February 28, 2018 - 12:52 pm

Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack on Wednesday announced that the nation’s largest sporting-goods retailer would no longer sell guns to people under 21.

The retailer will also stop selling assault rifles in the wake of this month’s Parkland, Florida, massacre, which left 17 people dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

"We support and respect the Second Amendment, and we recognize and appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible, law-abiding citizens," Stack said in the statement. "But we have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that’s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America – our kids."

The following will no longer be offered at Dick’s Sporting Goods stores, beginning Wednesday:

"Following all of the rules and laws, we sold a shotgun to the Parkland shooter in November of 2017. It was not the gun, nor type of gun, he used in the shooting. But it could have been," Stack's statement reads. "Clearly this indicates on so many levels that the systems in place are not effective to protect our kids and our citizens."

The statement continues, calling for elected officials to enact "common sense gun reform," as well as bans on assault-style firearms and high capacity magazines and bump stocks.
