Disability Rights Activists Celebrate 28th Anniversary of ADA

July 27, 2018 - 10:33 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - This week disability rights advocates are marking the 28th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Colleen Starkloff, founder and co-director of the Starkloff Disability Institute, says even though the legislation has been in place since 1990, there are still businesses that are not in compliance and are given up to six months to make the necessary changes.

“It would be the same thing as saying to someone who’s black ‘you can’t come in in here, we’re not going to serve you’. People don’t understand that accessibility is our pathway to our civil rights,” she says.

Despite that Starkloff says the A-D-A has greatly increased accessibility for the disabled and has created protections against discrimination in the workplace.
