"Driving a Cleaner Illinois" Initiative to Reduce Exhaust Solution

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Governor Bruce Rauner launches a new program called "Driving a Cleaner Illinois".

He says removing old diesel engines off the streets and out of rail yards will create better quality across the state.

The $108 million to fund the program is coming from a settlement with automaker Volkswagen.

“Volkswagen engaged in unethical behavior and installed devices in their diesel engines, in their vehicles that falsified emissions,” he says.

Governor Rauner added that this will make way for cities, schools and transit agencies to submit project ideas to the Illinois EPA detailing how they'll replace their old engines with newer, more environmentally friendly options.
