Ebola Outbreak in the Congo, Local Doctors Say Not to Worry

May 14, 2018 - 8:50 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Health officials in Congo have declared an Ebola outbreak in the country's northwestern part.  The World Health Organization is preparing for what it calls a worst-case scenario and is shipping vaccines immediately to the area.

SLU Care infectious diseases specialist Dr. Nirav Patel at SSM Health SLU Hospital says there is no danger in the US.

“It’s less likely to become a problem, so I can imagine people hear about an Ebola outbreak and start panicking, but I caution against the need for panic in this situation."

Patel says that's because the outbreak was identified early, it's in an area that already has some population with Ebola immunity, and the WHO is taking quick action to combat its spread.
