May 01, 2018 - 7:11 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A house exploded on North 40th street in Belleville Illinois just after 4 this morning.

The house was engulfed in flames when fire fighters arrived to the two-alarm fire, but no one was injured. According to neighbors, the house had been vacant and for lease for several weeks.

Investigators are still unsure as to the cause of the explosion, but some believe it may have been a natural gas leak. That theory was called just “speculation” by Belleville Fire Chief Tom Pour.

Ameren Illinois has checked the surrounding area for any natural gas issues but so far found nothing.
