Fairmount Park Opens for 93rd Season, Owners Worry They Won't Make it Through the Year

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - On the first day of their 93rd season, the president of Fairmount Park in Collinsville fears for the future if things don't change in the Illinois legislature.

Brian Zander's concerns aren't new. He and fellow track owners have been telling lawmakers for decades that they need to allow slot machines at tracks to compete with the state's ten casino licenses.

“If nothing really happens in this legislative section we might not be able to race the entire meet, so I think you don’t really like to get to that point but sometimes you just have to tell it the way it is,” he says.

Zander says local owners who run at Fairmount would rather stay local, but are sometimes forced out of state because purses are 2-3 times larger elsewhere.

There are 41 race days scheduled this year -- Zander worries about making it to the end of the year without help.
