FDA Issues Warning Against Opiate Relief Drugs

February 21, 2018 - 7:27 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Opiate addiction can make people desperate, and some may be counting on that. The Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Drug Administration are warning consumers about products that go by names like "opiate detox pro" and "opiate freedom."

"The FDA and their warning said that the way these things are being marketed, they could be considered prescription drugs which would require the approval of the FDA and then you'd actually need a doctor to prescribe those," says Don O'Brien with the Better Business Bureau.

They claim they can break your pain killer addiction or relieve your withdrawal symptoms, but O'Brien says 15 marketers and distributors were sent joint letters from the FDA and FTC warning them that their claims are unproven and their products are being marketed illegally. Those companies have missed a deadline to respond to federal agency concerns.
