Fewer High School Students are Playing Football

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Fewer Missouri high school students are playing football, according to the latest numbers from the state's high school athletic association.

About ten years ago, 24,000 Missouri students were playing high school football, but the number of players has been dropping steadily, now down to just under 20,000.

Association spokesman Jason West says a growing fear of head injuries is one reason.

“They are more aware of what can happen and the consequences of that, so there is a fear and the best way to make sure that doesn’t happen is not to put ourselves in that position,” he says.

West says high school football also has more competition from fall soccer and cross country, and there may be less interest among a generation of high school students who grew up playing video games rather than real sports.
