DOWNTOWN ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Downtown is getting a new grocery store Thursday, and it's locally-owned.

Owner Chris Goodson is opening his second Fields Foods on Washington Avenue at 18th, serving a part of downtown that's been growing but is also a little too far to walk to Schnucks Culinaria for daily shopping.

The new location will open on the ground floor of the Monogram on Washington apartment building. This new downtown Fields Foods is eleven blocks west of Culinaria.

When KMOX's Michael Calhoun asked Goodson about the neighbors' curiousity, the grocer said, "We took the covers that were on the windows down yesterday, and we've had lines of people poking their nose in the windows to look in. They're very excited, not just at the Monogram building, but all the buildings around it. People are very excited because they can walk right over and shop and walk right back home."

Fields already has a store in Lafayette Square, and is building two more in apartment buildings in Dogtown and the Central West End.

Goodson says while the stores trade size for convenience, they still carry a full line of products.

The new grocery store will host a grand opening event featuring special deals from 5-10 p.m. Thursday, at 1706 Washington Ave. St. Louis, MO 63101.
