Fire Department Still Struggling to Find Volunteers

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - As we reported a few weeks ago, there’s a shortage of volunteer firefighters.

Hillsboro Assistant Chief Brian Gaudet tells KMOX they've received only 11 applications and four of them are for junior firefighters.

Gaudet says it's typical of volunteer departments around the country.

"It’s the never ending battle of attempting to find people who want to unfortunately have to go through all the necessary training to become a firefighter and work for free at the end of the day," he says.

Gaudet predicts that within a year, they'll lose half the volunteers. He says it's really tough for his department, which used to run 500 calls a year but is now running a thousand.
