ST. JOHN, MO (KMOX/AP) - One of the victims that were shot last night at an Applebees in St. John was a firefighter, according to officials.

The Kinloch Fire Protection District says 20-year-old Arlydia Bufford was shot while eating dinner after an EMT class.

Last night, according to police, the firefighter was sitting with other first responders at an Applebees on St. Charles Rock Road when the gunman opened fire into two different booths. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say Bufford is in stable condition and is breathing on her own.

"My firefighter is fighting for her life, she is a very bright young lady, she is a very strong young lady," Stewart says. "Our hearts go out to the other victims of this senseless crime as well."

The suspect was arrested at an apartment and they are trying to figure out what led to the shooting, according to Kinloch Fire Chief Kevin Stewart.

The Kinloch Fire Protection District has started a GoFundMe to help Bufford and her family.

Courtney Demond Washington, 28, of St. Ann, has been charged with first-degree murder in a shooting that left one woman dead and two others wounded, including a firefighter, at an Applebee’s restaurant in suburban St. Louis, authorities say.

He was also charged with two counts of assault and three counts of armed criminal action in the attack.
