Firefighters Battle 2-Alarm Fire in Liberty Bell Oil Building

June 07, 2018 - 6:56 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A fire broke out early this morning, around 4am, at the old Liberty Bell Oil Building on S. Vandeventer.

St Louis fire department Battalion chief Paul Weil tells me the two-story vacant building had flames shooting out of it - when crews arrived - just after four.

"Police reported there was sombody in the building, turns out there was sombody in the building, he self evacuated. We struck two alarms, it took about an hour to get the fire under control and now we're just cleaning up," he says.

Chief Weil says one firefighter got overheated, but is expected to be okay. Crews remain on the scene - putting out hot-spots.

The building was vacant, and there's no word yet on what caused the fire. The building, built between 1910 and 1940, served as the offices for Liberty Bell Oil.
