August 09, 2018 - 10:13 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis County has its first confirmed case of West Nile Virus this year.

The county resident, who's not been identified, was released from a local medical facility after being admitted for West Nile symptoms. It's unclear what facility or where this person lives.

Dr. Faisal Khan, head of the department of public health, says while West Nile is serious and it's important to limit exposure, human cases are rare. In fact, many people who contract it don't experience any symptoms. Those who do have symptoms can experience fever, headache and swollen lymph nodes among other things.

Khan suggests protecting yourself by wearing long pants outside, eliminating standing water on your property and wearing insect repellant containing DEET.
