ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Music, water cannons and speeches from local officials helped kick off the return of a non-stop flight to Europe from St. Louis-Lambert International Airport.

WOW Air's first flight from St. Louis to Reykjavik was sold out. Lambert director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge says St. Louisans have wanted this for a long time.

“They have very affordable, easy access into European markets and that has been an ask for some time. If you’re a business you want to know that you’ve got easy access, we think it will also bring visitors in,” she says.

Hamm Niebruegge says it didn't take long for the airline to up service from four days a week to five.

“June 3rd it will be operating five days a week, not just four. Obviously it’s operating year round, they told us if they continue with this kind there’s a very good chance they’ll go every day by early spring and summer of next year,” she says.

Hamm-Niebruegge says many passengers on the first flight continued to other destinations -- Paris, London, Barcelona, Copenhagen and more. WOW Air is set up in Terminal 2 alongside Southwest
