ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — For the first time since May, when he pleaded guilty to steering taxpayer-funded contracts to campaign donors, former County Executive Steve Stenger faced the public today for his sentencing before a federal judge.

Judge Catherine Perry sentenced Stenger to 46 months, which he must begin no later than Sept. 21. He will have three years on probation afterward.

Our Kevin Killeen was in the courtroom and says Stenger seemed "blank" and he read an apology saying he has been remorseful everyday. His lawyer, Scott Rosenblum also spoke and said Stenger has lost about 25 pounds since he was indicted.

The just under 3-month prison sentence was the maximum Stenger could have received and will also have to pay a $250,000 fine. Stenger has already pre-paid $130,000.

Stenger resigned from his position in May, before pleading guilty to three counts of honest services mail fraud for orchestrating a pay-to-play scheme.

His wife is expected to give birth to their third child on Sept. 13, just a week before he's required to begin his prison sentence. She was not seen in the packed courtroom today.

His attorneys said Stenger is "very remorseful" for what he's done, that he has lost sleep and lost weight.

"Steve Stenger abused his power as an elected official to benefit himself," Special Agent in Charge Richard Quinn of the FBI St. Louis Division said in a statement. "Had the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office not stopped Stenger from misusing taxpayer dollars for his personal gain, he would have continued to run St. Louis County into the ground. He will now have years in federal prison to reflect on the cost of his greed.”

Stenger had no comments for media when exiting the courthouse Friday afternoon.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information.
